The Mets are off to a decent start this season considering the fact that the Mets didn’t make any big acquisitions in the off-season and have had to deal with injuries to key players such as Jason Bay and Angel Pagan. The most we can hope for is that the Mets will stay around .500 and compete for a wild card berth. The Mets will need a cash infusion in order to be able to compete in the future. Some of that cash will likely come from an investor but I expect that the Mets will try to offload Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes or Johan Santana. Moving one or more of those players will cut salary and hopefully yield multiple quality players.
On a positive note both Jose Reyes and Ike Davis are having good seasons. Even Carlos Beltran is performing better than expected, but that could also make him more valuable trade bait. The Angel Pagan injury is disappointing because I really supported the idea of him being the regular center fielder. The biggest question marks for the Mets involve pitching. The Mets have a bargain basement starting and middle relief corps that can’t compete with the Phillies. One saving grace has been that Frankie Rodriquez has pitched well recently.

Wow, what a month it has been in the world of the New York Mets. We’ve had injuries. We’ve had drama. And we had a crushing loss the other night against our cross town rivals the Yankees. In this episode I break down the reaction to Luis Castillo’s dropped pop-up. And I talk about the wave of injuries the Mets have had over the past few weeks.
We’re on the verge of a brand new season. Citi Field has been opened with two exhibition games against the Red Sox. Livan Hernandez will be the fifth starter to begin the season. And in a blockbuster last minute move that has caused quite a stir the Mets have picked up Gary Sheffield off of the scrap heap.
I’ve been away for awhile so it’s time for a thorough review of the entire squad to figure out how we got to first place and have managed the latest hot streak. Also a discussion about some issues of concern, like the bullpen! A look ahead at the Mets schedule which gets very tough after the Mets face the Astros.
Lots of changes to talk about on this podcast. We welcomed our second daughter into the world right around the time that Willie Randolph was being fired in California. I’ll give my thoughts on the firing of Willie Randolph and what it might mean for the Mets. I also talk about the measures Omar Minaya may need to take if the Mets don’t substantially improve over the next four weeks. Greg from Connecticut calls in and expresses the frustration that many Mets fans have been feeling.
