Ledee and Piazza Return to New York
Ledee Picked Up Off Waivers
According to this story, the Mets have claimed Ricky Ledee off of waivers from the (suddenly streaking) LA Dodgers. This is a move to shore up the bench obviously.
According to the story, “Ledee was batting .245 (13-for-53) in 43 games with a homer and eight RBIs for the Dodgers this season. The eight-year veteran missed 64 games because of a pulled groin muscle. Last season, he hit .278 in 102 games with seven homers and 39 RBIs after signing with the Dodgers as a free agent.”
I believe that this makes sense because I’ve been concerned that the bench has gotten a little thin with Valentin playing everyday and Endy Chavez playing more with Cliff Floyd hurt. Plus we’ve been getting very limited production from Chris Woodward and Eli Marrero.
Welcome Back Mike!
Tonight the Shea faithful get to welcome Mike Piazza. I’m glad to see Mike in the middle of a pennant race with San Diego. His numbers are good too, hitting .297 with 16 HR and 49 RBI. Not stellar I know but consider that the past two season he was .251, 19, 62 and .266, 20, 54.
I think that the Mets made the right move in letting Piazza move on. I’ve been a huge fan of his since he came to the Mets so it was tough for me to come to terms with that fact. His production was steadily falling though and the Mets needed to free up that salary for better, younger players. I’ve got some good Mike Piazza stories since a friend of mine grew up with him and I got to meet him a few times during his run with the Mets.
I would’ve thought he’d end up in the AL as a DH so signing with San Diego was a bit of a surprise to me. In any case, I hope he does well at the plate while the Mets sweep the series.

How do they room for him on the roster? Floyd’s going to the DL again?

Word is that Eli Marrero will be getting optioned to AAA Norfolk.

Well, Mike Piazza got his ovations and he got a hit. And the Mets won so it’s alright with me.
David Wright might be breaking out of the slump and that’s good news. The bullpen once again saved Trachsel who pitched ok but didn’t go far enough into the game.
Billy Wagner did his job, even after an apparent misplay of a ball at third by David Wright to put runners on 1st and 2nd in the 9th inning.

Did you see the home run Piazza just hit off Pedro? And everyone at Shea cheered him to a curtain call. When was the last time you saw something like that?

I saw it. I think they’re getting a bit carried away. How can you take a curtain call in an opposing park?
Anyway, Lastings Milledge is giving me heartburn!

Eh - Piazza is gonna be in the HOF, as a Met. I’m fine with the standing O - plus he’s a great guy.
Wagner scares me - tonight wasn’t a couple of hits in the 9th - it was a HR!
Floyd’s on the DL - it’ll be interesting to see how the outfield platoon handles it without X.
