Where New York Mets Fans Get Their Fix

Not Tonight Jeff

Jeff Francouer thinks that the Braves can catch the Mets. Well, they didn’t get any closer tonight.

Pedro shakes off a poor start to go six innings and get the win. Meanwhile the Mets’ bats came out early against starter Horacio Ramirez. David Wright adds an opposite field homer to provide an insurance run.

Feliciano, Sanchez and a streaking Billy Wagner go the last three innings to seal the deal.

Nice to have Pedro back. Despite the poor first inning, he turned it around and pitched very well over the next five innings. I even thought he might come out for the seventh. Guess they didn’t want to push it in the first outing.

  1. Sweet. Take the first two from Atlanta. Beltran really swinging the bat well. This ain’t 1998 folks. The Braves are not winning the division.

Also buyoed by a nice outing by El Duque. Three unearned runs on three hits. In years past that would’ve meant an L for the hard luck Mets but this is a different team.

  2. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed to see what happens before the deadline. ESPN has me scared out of my wits with their incessant rumor mill running amok.

I believe wholeheartedly that Willis is not on the market, and that Omar will not pair up Milledge and Heilman to get Zito.

I also believe that Omar has a couple of brain cells firing to realize Livan Hernandez or Armas Jr. will not, in any way, help us out.

In the last few games, our starting pitchers got into Lima-esque funks and we’ve bailed them out. We don’t need another one to add to the rotation.

  3. The Braves are toast. I am more concerned that if the Mets make it into the post season (and there is no reason not to) they will end up being out pitched in an embarrassing way ala the Astros.

  4. I was sweeping the floors in my apartment this morning when I stopped for a moment and thought about the Mets sweeping the Braves. Not wanting to jinx things I let the moment pass.

Well, they did it. The first sweep of the Braves in a very long time. Now they’re 15 games out and I don’t want to hear anything more about the Mets looking over their shoulders at Larry, Andruw and Co.

The Glavine performance concerns me but maybe Omar can make something happen between now and tomorrow at 4PM to take a bit of the pressure off.

  5. Who cares about the Braves? We SHOULD sweep them. I hope we get Dontrelle by tomorrow – we need the starting pitching to beat up on Boston or Detroit.

Great job Mets – keep it up!

  6. So Milledge left the game (AAA) in the first inning which some people said it may mean he was headed to Oakland… but actually he was edjected… I had my breath held there… No Zito I say.. not for Milledge atleast

  7. Ok so since today is the trade deadline I thought I’d throw up some rumors so we could comment on them…

    Milledge and others for Schmidt?
    Milledge and Bannister for Oswalt?
    Heilman for Marquis?
John Maine, Carlos Gomez, and Aaron Heilman for Zito?

ok so my looks at these are anything with Milledge for anyone not named Willis is a no go… the Marquis deal is a no.. he has a 12 and 13 ER games this year… But the last trade… as much as Maine has been wowing us lately I’d got get Zito for that trade… It would be better if they could sign Zito to a long-term contract before the season ends too.. Stop the *#@!in Yankees from over paying for him.. Heilman hasn’t been what they thought he would be which may be because he’s a malcontent for not being a starter at all this year… and if that’s the reason I say bye bye… and Gomez.. well here’s what they say about him:

He’s a 20 year-old CF/RF currently residing in Double A. Gomez is holding his own with a .281/.341/.432 line so far, including a blistering July (1.096 OPS). He’s a raw prospect and has struggled with lefties. Baseball America seems enamored of his tools and ranked him third among Mets prospects entering the season.

So Go get Zito if that’s all they are asking for him!!!

  8. How about we divide Milledge even for every trade we can.
For example, we’ll give one of his rocket arms to the A’s for Zito, his speed we can give to Florida for Willis and so on.

    It’s really a flawless plan guys…

  9. well if we could do that why not just swap his arm for Zambrano’s pitching arm?? then trade him away… we’ll have a pitcher that will actually not be bad and the other’s can have a speed guy with a dead arm

  10. Getting close to the deadline. The suspense is killing me although it’s very possible that Omar will hold onto his cards and do nothing.

In other news, the Devil Rays have placed Scott Kazmir on the DL due to rotator cuff problems.

  11. 1 hour and 19 minutes to go.

Good articles on SI.com – Oswalt or Schmidt are great offers that I’d gladly trade Lost-Fly-Ball-Lidge for.

Post trade / post Braves sweep podcast tonight Rob?

  12. ***PLEASE NOTE THE BELOW MAY MAKE YOU CRY***

In a stunning development that could affect the Mets’ postseason chances, right-handed setup man Duaner Sanchez is out for the year with a separated pitching shoulder, FOXSports.com has learned.

Sanchez, 26, apparently was injured while riding as a passenger in a taxicab that was involved in a car accident Sunday night after the Mets landed in Miami. He returned to New York to undergo surgery on Monday.

  13. OK so supposidly the guy who hit the Taxi was drunk… Screw sending him to jail.. just put him on the field at Shea during a game and watch the fans fix the problem.. it would save taxpayers a lot of money of holding him in a cell

    Comment by Ron | July 31, 2006

  14. Not to be a cold-hearted, callous, pr***…Sanchez being DL’ed will NOT be the end of the mets season. He has been phenomenal, don’t get me wrong. But in no way, will this hurt our chances of going to the postseason.

Don’t let this get blown out of proportion.

    Comment by Gary | July 31, 2006

  15. Damn, that\’s bad news. He was a top notch set up man. We\’ve got to look at Feliciano, Bradford and Heilman now as possibles for that role I think. Heilman still scares me too so I\’m thinking maybe one if the other guys. What a bummer!

Comment by Rob Safuto | July 31, 2006

  16. No it’s not the end.. but it’s a big hit to a world series title… we are making the playoffs for sure… but now we’re focusing on a world series title and that dream took a hit with Sanchez getting hurt… and I say we go with Bradford.. he’s been amazing so far with the best runners inherited numbers in baseball… plus he doesn’t go crazy for being left in for more then 1 inning
