New York Mets Podcast #24
Thank heavens the Mets won the second game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Two in a row to the worst team in the NL would have been too much to bear.
Congrats to David Wright, Jose Reyes, Paul Lo Duca, Carlos Beltran, Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine for
Allow me to rant about the Mets’ dismal performance over the last two weeks. I feel like the Met pitchers need to be more aggresive with opposing hitters. Too much nibbling and too much getting beat while ahead in the count. On top of that you have injuries, runner LOB, mental mistakes and Willie’s penchant for letting a pitcher go one (or two) batters too many. Pick your pet peeve and feel free to comment. Oh, and Jose Lima might start Friday night. Doh!
Did I forget to mention that the Mets still have a 10.5 game lead?

i hear you talking about how the mets need a little more aggressiveness, and i think the solution might be our old friend ty wigginton. he would fit right in at 2b, he loves the mets and would play hard and is relatively cheap. he isnt the best defensively, but he has some ribeyes in his bat. he is a scrapper.

My pet peeve is injuries. Every time you turn around someone in the starting lineup or the rotation gets hurt. No wonder the Mets are struggling. Who’s currently hurt; Pedro, Delgado, Lo Duca, Bannister, Zambrano. And we just got back Nady and Floyd. So it’s understandable to struggle when you have key players out all the time. Eventually Wright, Reyes, Beltran and Glavine will get tired from carrying this team on their backs.
If it was closer in the East then I would be worried. But it’s not. So I say put Pedro on the DL and don’t let him pitch in the All-Star Game. Don’t let Lo Duca play in the All-star game. Let’s get our guys some rest. October is a long time away.
We need to be healthy and fresh in September/October. So lets take the time to rest gyus now when they are hurt so they will be ready for the games that count.

Yeah, I’m concerned too about Lo Duca in the All-Star game - apparently the NL is carrying 4 third basemen and only 2 catchers, so Lo Duca will likely have to squat for at least 5 innings behind the plate. But I do think he should go, I am proud of the fact of so much Mets representation on the team and I know for sure Wright and Reyes are psyched. I hope we clean the AL’s clock for a change.

I do not feel comfortable with the rotation in it’s present state. Something has to be done, whether it be be letting Heilman start or bringing up Pelphrey. If that’s not a good fit, and the right pitcher is available, make the trade. Milledge should be dealt for the right starter. The outfield for next year could be Beltran, Chavez and Nady. Anyone remember the last 5 tool guys the Mets had, Alex Ochoa and Alex Escobar? Where are they now?? Omar has to do something about the rotation. Soler and Maine need more seasoning in the minors.

I’m definitely in the camp of people who want the ailing Mets to rest. And that means Pedro and Lo Duca should sit out the All Star game. A tough decision for a guy like Lo Duca who deserves the recognition. Pedro never has a problem taking the All Star game off.
The rotation is an issue. Even with Duque’s sharp start last night I feel the Mets are a starter short. Maine didn’t show me anything the first time around. And for heaven’s sake not Jose Lima.

Another good podcast Rob. I agree we are in desperate straits for a legitimate starter. We need a young power pitcher - we have enough “finesse” on the staff and a young arm would learn alot from all the veterans we have. Soler obviously wasn’t it, hasta la vista as they say in Cuba.
Bannister is throwing from the mound and mght be ready after the break - I like what I saw from the guy and based on his comments that I read I think he has exactly the right attitude. Maine showed us a spark the other day (way better than his first start - at least he was challenging some hitters this time) but lost focus after 5 innings - perhaps that can be managed. I am ill at the thought of Lima back in the rotation. Frankly I don’t see much available on the market and I much prefer promoting from within to trading at this point.
