There's no doubt that Billy Wagner is a top flight reliever. I think that most Mets fans have huge expectations for him in this role.

I would like to monitor that situation with Castro. I hadn't noticed that trend but it is something worth watching and definitely concerning now that LoDuca is potentially down for a few games.

Wagner has been consistently among the top relievers in the game - didn't he win the Rolaids award a couple years back? His walks are up this year but in the big picture 4 blown saves is not alot. I guess Met fans just need something to complain about, even though we are dominant this year. He still throws fire.

One thing I noticed is that all six of his shaky outings have been with Castro behind the plate, and all the rest of his (solid) outings were with Lo Duca. Coincidence? Normally I think Castro is the better defensive catcher but maybe Wagner's chemistry is just better with Lo Duca. Tough call, cause Wagner is brought in in close games when Willie is prone to make late-inning defensive switches.

As poorly as Wagner has pitched, he's still the 16th best closer in the major leagues. (See <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/stats/league_leaders.jsp?statType=2&timeFrame=1&sortByStat=SV&baseballScope=mlb&timeSubFrame=2006" rel="nofollow">MLB Saves Stats</a>.)

Hopefully, he'll have an easier time in the future because we expect the best in NY. But closing is a weird thing, so I'm not ready to throw him under the bus yet.

Add in that we are comfortable in first place - and I don't see anyone catching us during the regular season, and I don't see any need to panic.

Okay, here goes. The guy's got something. Maybe he's going through heat of New York syndrome. Consider Beltran last year. He's got the goods to be the best damn closer we've ever seen. He's got to settle down or whatever the hell it is.
Also remember Jorge Julio. I don't think the guy was deserving of throwing foul balls into the stands, let alone an actual pitcher. And right before we traded him, he was doing damn decent, and he's not too shabby in Arizona.

Maybe it's just this huge spotlight on Wagner. Or maybe it's just that he sucks. Who knows.
